Fridays have become a sort of ritual with our excursions for Fish and Chips. Last night we were off to Hamilton to a place we had been to before, (no Names). The Haddock was excellent but the chips were not the best. They also serve deep fried breaded mushrooms which were alright but no as good as the ones we have at another restaurant. The service was great and our server was courteous and cheerful. This was our third trip to this restaurant and this time it seemed that it had slid a bit downhill. As usual on the way home we stopped at our favourite ice cream place and it was two Butterscotch and Black Cherry cups. What this place calls a single scoop is about three scoops anywhere else. It is excellent ice cream.

This afternoon at 2:00 there is entertainment being put on in the Common Room. This time it is, believe it or not, our mailman who seemingly plays the guitar and sings. I’ll go and check it out but the first sound of Country and Western and I’m out of there. Can’t stand C & W. Anyway I’ll continue this when I come back.
I’m back. The entertainment started at 2:00 and ran through until 4:00. An intermission was called at 3:00 and I left. The singer was not that good and most of the songs he sung, myself and others had never heard. I think he wrote them himself. Any how as I said he wasn’t that good and I left. Waste of $5.00 as far as I am concerned. A few of my friends will have some caustic remarks that I left but I was not enjoying it and that is all there is to it. We have had other entertainment in the building and they have been really terrific but I’m afraid our Mailman wasn’t in their league.

The more I watch or read the news the more my disgust, contempt and distrust of the Americans, especially their political system, rises. Trumps tweets and statements are so riddled with lies that I doubt that anyone in the White House or the Republican Party can distinguish what is true anymore. Trumps’ habitual lying seems to have become contagious as all who work with him have fallen into the quagmire that perpetually surrounds him. I get the feeling that Trump is desperately trying to prove Pres. Lincoln wrong. You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time.
Abraham Lincoln, (attributed)
16th president of US (1809 – 1865)
He is attempting to “fool all of the people all of the time”. He is definitely fooling some of, them people all, of the time with the aid of his cohorts at Fox News. They seem to be applying the axiom “Divide and Conquer” and the lower stratus of American society is swallowing it “hook, line, and sinker”.

IS TRUMP THE PRECURSOR TO BIG BROTHER?

IS TRUMP THE PRECURSOR TO BIG
BROTHER
2018/08/04

Is it possible that George Orwell’s dystopian novel “1984” is slowly becoming a reality? A few days ago in “Ramblings 2018 (13) I spoke of Trump setting up his own “Ministry of Truth” and introducing “Newspeak”. This was my conclusion after reading that at a rally in Kansas City he told the audience “Stick with us. Don’t believe the crap you see from these people, the fake news. … What you’re seeing and what you’re reading is not what’s happening.” This is about as close to Orwellian as you can get.
It is almost incomprehensible how Trump praises the dictators of the world and reviles his friends and allies. That is until you look at it from the point that Trump is enthralled by so called strong leaders, men who subjugate and terrorize their own people. Mayhaps it is the bully within screaming to get out and run wild. Trump lacks humanity or empathy, people mean nothing to him.
His latest proclamation is his threat to shut the government down if he doesn’t get the money to build his version of the “Berlin Wall” across the border with Mexico. This is not a president it is a spoiled brat who, when he cannot get his way resorts to childish threats.
Donald J. Trump is a master of the chaotic he seems to thrive on creating dissention and ambiguity with the right hand not knowing what the left is doing. It is established that he tries to run the country like one of his businesses where he allows no disagreement and considers himself to be the greatest deal maker ever created. His Hubris knows no bounds.
Because Trumps’ supporters think that he and only he speaks the truth they are harassing and threatening media reporters at his rallies the Ministry of Truth is slowly gaining ground. Trump is laying the ground work and “1984” might be “2024” or sooner. It is well established that Trump is an invertebrate liar who has difficulty distinguishing fake from real. His rampage against the “News Media” is indicative of a would be pompous “Tin Pot Dictator” who cannot accept criticism in any form what so ever. He is the little boy who when things don’t go his way picks up his marbles and goes home.

Woke up this morning to the news of a mass shooting in Toronto, 3 dead including a 10-year- old girl and 13 injured. The dead include the shooter who died from gun shot wounds and the S.I.U. (Special Investigating Unit) is investigating to see if there was any Police wrong doing. Why? The shooter got what he deserved. This latest shooting happened at Logan and Danforth in Toronto’s Greek Town. Roughly 20 years ago my youngest daughter lived on the Danforth just east of Logan and it was and is a great place to live in Toronto. Don’t know what is happening in the country as gun violence is escalating and it looks like we are trying to emulate our gun happy cousins to the south where most of the hand guns used in shootings are smuggled in from. The shooter has been identified as 29-year-old Faisal Hussain who according to a statement put out by his family suffered from severe mental problems.

Had a very interesting lunch today. I was invited to lunch at the Mandarin by a Chinese chap named Sen who lives in the building. He is from Shanghai and came to Canada in 1986. He plays the accordion and though I have not heard him I am told he is very good. We had some interesting conversations about places we have been. He would like to go to Scandinavia and I would like to go to China. He is a most interesting man.

I read in the Huffington Post this morning that the “Orange-Haired Troglodyte” told an audience at a rally in Kansas basically “that every thing the see and hear or read is a lie”, to me that really smells “Orwellian 1984”. It is almost as if the Trog is trying to set up his own: Ministry of Truth” and introduce “Newspeak” where the truth is a lie and a lie is the truth.
The Mayor of Toronto has come forward with the sensible request of both the Provincial and Federal Governments that all Handguns be banned if not in the country at least in the city after the latest shooting spree on the Danforth. Kudos to Mayor Tory. There is absolutely no need for citizens to own handgun. We are not living in the late 19th century and this is not the U.S.

This being Thursday my P.S.W. (Personal Support Worker) comes to help clean my apartment and other odd jobs around here. This morning we took my old bed apart and carried out to the recycling bin. After that we put my new bed together and rearranged my bedroom. I have a great deal more room as I downsized to a single from a double. Going to need a roadmap to get around now. Seriously it looks a lot better and more importantly I now have a decent mattress for my back. Yeah along with having a bad heart, C.O.P.D., Diabetes, I have a bad back. I’m a walking catastrophe waiting to happen. My friends here in the building along with my daughters are all ways telling me to slow down and take it easy. BORING. Tomorrow is the best day of the month as we GET PAID. That means Fish and Chip and deep fried mushrooms night. Exciting, Eh What.

IS THIS THE FACE OF A FASCIST?

IS THIS THE FACE OF A FASCISTS ?
2018/07/03
He who would be Dictator has just been handed another gift in his quest for power. Supreme Court Judge, Anthony Kennedy, has announced his retirement allowing the Orange-Haired one to appoint an ultra-conservative to fill the slot, pending ratification by the Republican majority in both the Senate and Congress. With this appointment he will turn the clock back at least fifty years, perhaps longer, in American Jurisprudence, (the science or philosophy of Law).
In the first year of his Presidency and in the campaign leading up to his election, Trump targeted Mexico and the problem of illegal immigration across the border between the U.S. and Mexico. He called these illegals, rapists, murderers, and generally bad people.
He has now targeted Canada and the European Union with illegal tariffs. He has already started bullying and blatantly lying about us imposing crippling tariffs on our steel and aluminium and threatening to place a 25% tariff on automobiles made in Canada for the American market. Actually the automobile tariff is on all vehicles imported into the U.S. He does not differentiate between ally and foe but has decided to punish all and establish it seems, an Isolationist Policy similar to what occurred in the states between the two world wars. He is the quintessential anti- globalist.
Sunday was the True Norths’ (Canada) 151st Birthday and it was celebrated in part by the imposing of retaliatory tariffs on around sixteen billion dollars of American goods coming into Canada. Trump started this Trade War and Canada and the E.U. are not rolling over and playing dead. Canada might be a mouse lying beside an elephant but remember a mouse has sharp teeth and can run circles around an elephant. That’s not to say we can win as nobody wins in a Trade War just a lot of people get hurt.
Tomorrow is Independence Day in the states and the world will be deluged adnauseam by how great and powerful America is. It will give him a great opportunity to strut and swagger puffing his chest out in imitation of one of his favourite people “Mussolini”. I think somewhere along the line he got his values turned around. He praises the worlds dictators and trashes his friends and allies.
His “Zero Tolerance” order on immigration is the work of a cruel heartless individual whose racism constantly manifests itself. He is determined to undo and reverse the work done by previous administrations in the field of civil rights, especially that of the Obama Presidency. His “Braggadocio” has no limits and his need for praise is reminiscent of a little boy trying to please his parents.
The next election is just over two years away and hopefully he will be voted out of office, but, don’t hold your breath.

Went to Hamilton yesterday with a couple of friends to buy a pair of sandals at a place on Upper James Street. We pulled up to a stop light and on the grassy boulevard was a young homeless man, all his worldly possession in a shopping buggy, lying on the grass sharing what looked like a can of Spam with his dog. I have seen homeless people before but never anything like that. What else surprised me was I choked up and if I had any money on me I would have jumped out of the car and gave it to him. I have no idea what in his life happened to bring him down to being homeless but it really hit home with me how lucky I was. When the light turned green we carried on and I got my sandals but I couldn’t get the picture of that young man and his dog which was sitting patiently while his master cut the meat up for him. If things had been different that could have been me.

As we all know Trump was in Canada to attend the G7 meeting at Charlevoix Quebec and as usual when things didn’t go the way Trump wanted he waited until he was on the plane heading to Singapore to vent his childish anger at Prime Minister Trudeau because he stood up for Canada and said “we would not be pushed around”.
Here is a President who angers and upsets his closest allies and praises authoritarian dictators. Trump touts himself as the “Greatest Negotiator” ever which is one way he feeds his narcissistic persona. Nobody can do anything better than he can, and that includes lying and back stabbing. He is an habitual liar, misogynist, adulterer, hypocrite, homophobe, bully, and racist. He is also extremely dangerous as he is an “America Firster and Isolationist”. He hides behind the fact that America is both economically and militarily a great power and he will threaten who he pleases. This time he is threatening Canada and the European Union (Americas closest allies) by declaring a Trade War with tariffs against steel and aluminium. He is also pondering tariffs against imported automobiles.
Two hundred and six years ago when Canada wasn’t a nation but British North America the Americans declared war on the U.K for the second time and the “War of 1812” erupted. The American thought that the best way to get at the Brits was to invade and conquer the Provinces of Upper (Ontario) and Lower (Quebec) Canada. Well they came they fought and they basically got their butts kicked and retreated back across the border. The war lasted about 3 years and when it ended everything returned to normal and Canada was still British and not part of the U.S. Now these 200 odd years later America has declared economic war on Canada and this time we might not be able to beat them. We rely more on their trade than they do on ours and they have the where-with-all to really hurt our economy. We Canadians are a pretty polite easy going people until someone tries to shove us around. When that happens the hackles go up and we fight back. As the P.M. said “Canada will not be pushed around” especially by an Orange Hair Moronic Buffoon.

IF IT ISN’T NAILED DOWN IT’S STOLEN

4100
IF IT ISN’T NAILED DOWN IT’S STOLEN
2018/05/07

It has been quite some time since I have written anything about 4100 and I’m sorry to say we live in a building that has thieves within it’s walls.
For at least 5 years (since I moved in) the tenants have asked the Landlord to install security cameras and the answer is that “it is not in the budget”, yet other buildings owned by Halton Community Housing have cameras. It seems that 4100 is regulated to the hind teat. “Not in the budget” was the standard reply to any request from the tenants, that has now changed to “It’s on the list” by my reckoning that list reaches to the moon or further.
To get back to the main point of this Blog, theft. People will find to hard to believe that a Senior Citizen Building has “Sticky Fingered” individuals as residents or should I say denizens. Since I have resided here (5 years) I have heard of some pretty weird happenings when it comes to stealing. Guess the most common theft is newspapers which are deliver to your apartment and dropped outside the door. One tenant was having their paper stolen every morning. He finally caught the person and what makes it weird is the person stealing the paper can’t speak English. Clothes have been stolen out of the dryers in the laundry room and from the storage rooms. We do not have individual lockers just shelves with the apartment number on them. One tenant had a marble table stolen. A few tenants have had suitcases taken. The first floor apartments have patios instead of balconies and all sorts of things go missing. Items are even stolen from the lobby, for instance a small stainless steel watering can that held flowers. Candles are also stolen but perhaps the weirdest theft was the wick out of a candle. Yep, someone actually pulled the wick, which was 6 inches long, out of a candle and absconded with it. Christmas decorations are stolen also the pillows off the couches and chairs in the lobby. There was one unknown individual who stole the toilet paper out of the washrooms in the lobby. It got so bad that the maintenance man installed lockable dispensers.
There was another incident a few days ago. A lady tenant passed away and one of her daughters was here to clean out her apartment. The deceased tenant had a small planter on her patio in the shape of a rabbit. You guessed it. It was stolen while the daughter was inside cleaning. Talk about a low life. There is an undercurrent of racism in the building directed mainly at the many Chinese tenants who it seems are blamed for anything and everything. Most of the Chinese seniors do not speak English so they are the perfect scapegoats for all the problems with things disappearing. It really upsets some tenants that (1) there are Chinese in the building and (2) that they can’t or won’t speak English.
Overall 4100 isn’t a bad place to live. It beats being on the street or in a nursing home. We live independently and the building is pretty well looked after and the rents are geared to income. There are a few issues with Halton Housing but nothing Earth shattering. The way I look at it is this is the last way station in the journey.

It is just the 3rd day of May and already I have heard complaints about how hot it is. Of course this is quite normal because we here in Southern Ontario make complaining about the weather a national past time. It is either to cold, to much snow, to much rain, to humid or to hot. Guess we are just never satisfied. My Dad loved the heat. The hotter the better. Maybe that’s why he spent so much time working in hot countries like Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Dubai, Egypt, Central and South America, and Indonesia. When I was much younger the heat didn’t bother me but as I grow longer in the tooth I don’t much care for it and being a long time smoker (quit 5 years ago) my lungs are damaged and when the humidity gets high I have trouble breathing. That’s when I love my Air Conditioner. Speaking of which I have to service and clean to get it ready for the summer. As I am writing it is 22C but feels warmer with the humidity. Starting Sunday, the 5th the temp will be in the mid to high teens, a respite before the heat starts to climb and keep climbing into the high 30Cs. I keep saying I’m moving to Baffin Island but then in the summer the black flies are out in force and in the winter the average temp is in the minus 30C range. That’s a might chilly. Actually I’m ashamed to say I don’t know that much about Baffin Island which is part of the Territory of Nunavut (our land) with the capital Iqaluit (place of the fish) located on it.
2018/05/04
As yesterday was a bit on the humid side I pulled my A/C out of the sleeve and cleaned it up and oiled the fan as it will soon be getting lots of use when the humidity climbs as the summer progresses.
‘Tis going to be a boring weekend as there are no plans to try a new Fish and Chip restaurant or a concert to go to. I can always go for a ride if the weather permits. Friday is Food Bank day in the building and as usual I’ll wander down near the end of it to see if there is anything good left. Sometimes there is other times it’s crap. Well one more pot of soup to make this weekend then the soup pot gets put away until the Fall. Just came up from the Food Bank. There wasn’t much there except the usual, lots of bread, veggies, and can goods. There was also packages of what can only be describes as mystery meat as no one knew what it was.
Cable went out around 4:00pm and it is now 7:00pm and it’s not back on. It is annoying when the cable goes out. I think this time it is due to the high winds we have been having today. Gust up to 100km (62mph).
2018/05/05
Dozed off on the couch last night and woke up at 3:30am the cable was still down. At 7:30am when I got up it was back up and working. Even if it came back on at 4:00am that’s 12 hours with no TV or internet. Guess that wind storm did some bad damage. When a storm cuts the power it can be very frustrating as we come to realize just how much we depend on electricity in our lives. At least people who have gas appliances in their homes can cook, have hot water and in some cases refrigeration. No electricity no cooking, no hot water. No refrigeration, no nothing. The joys of civilization.

RAMBLINGS 2018 (9)

2018/04/27
It has been a month since I sat down to “Ramble” and a few things have occurred since the end of March. We had two deaths in the building one was a grand old Lady of 99 years, sharp as a tack, who was hoping to make it until December and her 100th but her cancer returned and mercifully took her quickly. We also had two ladies move out to nursing homes so now there is four empty apartments in the building. Spring has finally arrived and I took my scooter out of storage on Wed. the 25th and went for a short ride. Breeze was a bit chilly especially when I wound it out to max 45kph. It feels great to have my mobility back. I think this will be the last year I’ll be riding as I have noticed my balance is starting to get a bit wonky now and then. It looks like I could go from 2-wheel scooter to 4-wheel med-chair. Bummer, though I think my girls would prefer that.

2018/04/29
It’s Sunday already, 2nd last day of April and it is a chilly 4C but the forecast is for warmer weather ahead. It’s about time that the weather decided to warm up and hopefully stay warm. Never can tell lately. Weather is so damn wonky lately we might get snow in August.
Anyway enough of that. Went to another “Sophisticate Swing” concert last night and really enjoyed it, got home at 10:30 which is late for me. This group of 19 people are trying to keep the “Big Band” sounds of the 30s, 40s, and 50s, alive and well. The band has 2 vocalists, Tricia Cole and Tony Sciara and they are pretty good. For some reason they hold these concerts in churches. The first one I went to at the beginning of the month was in a United Church and last night at Presbyterian Church. My fellow nonbelievers are going to start thinking I got religion. I can assure them that is not the case. I am getting to be somewhat of a social butterfly lately. Next month it seems I’m going to Port Dover. Never been there. I think we are going for fish and chips. That’s another thing almost every Friday evening we go out for Fish and Chips at different restaurants. I’m getting to be a Fish and Chip gourmet also if I eat much more Fish and Chips I think I’ll start growing gills. Oh yeah there is also the bi-weekly excursion for Liver and Onions, which if I could I would eat almost every night. I love it. I really enjoy these outings as it gets me out and about (not oot and aboot) and away from the building and it’s confining atmosphere.
2018/04/30
It is the last day of April and one could not ask for a nicer Spring day. It is clear and sunny and 16C (61F). The sun worshipper here in the building will soon be sitting outside soaking up the rays and working on their tans. For me those days are over for as I get older my tolerance for hot sunny days diminishes. The good thing is I can ride around on my scooter instead of being cabin bound. Got informed last night that I’m going to Port Dover (on Lake Erie) on May 16th. Never been there so it should be interesting. Had another friend praise my Beef Barley soup. For some inexplicable reason I make good soup and everyone who tries it praised it. Me I could live on soup in fact my favourite two are Navy Bean soup and Cabbage soup. Well that and Liver and Onions and Fish and Chips. I have also been introduced to some Indian cuisine in the form of Samosa and Paroka. Just spicy enough for my taste. Guess that’s all for now. Got the urge to go riding. Back sometime soon.
