RAMBLINGS 2018 (9)
It has been a month since I sat down to “Ramble” and a few things have occurred since the end of March. We had two deaths in the building one was a grand old Lady of 99 years, sharp as a tack, who was hoping to make it until December and her 100th but her cancer returned and mercifully took her quickly. We also had two ladies move out to nursing homes so now there is four empty apartments in the building. Spring has finally arrived and I took my scooter out of storage on Wed. the 25th and went for a short ride. Breeze was a bit chilly especially when I wound it out to max 45kph. It feels great to have my mobility back. I think this will be the last year I’ll be riding as I have noticed my balance is starting to get a bit wonky now and then. It looks like I could go from 2-wheel scooter to 4-wheel med-chair. Bummer, though I think my girls would prefer that.
It’s Sunday already, 2nd last day of April and it is a chilly 4C but the forecast is for warmer weather ahead. It’s about time that the weather decided to warm up and hopefully stay warm. Never can tell lately. Weather is so damn wonky lately we might get snow in August.
Anyway enough of that. Went to another “Sophisticate Swing” concert last night and really enjoyed it, got home at 10:30 which is late for me. This group of 19 people are trying to keep the “Big Band” sounds of the 30s, 40s, and 50s, alive and well. The band has 2 vocalists, Tricia Cole and Tony Sciara and they are pretty good. For some reason they hold these concerts in churches. The first one I went to at the beginning of the month was in a United Church and last night at Presbyterian Church. My fellow nonbelievers are going to start thinking I got religion. I can assure them that is not the case. I am getting to be somewhat of a social butterfly lately. Next month it seems I’m going to Port Dover. Never been there. I think we are going for fish and chips. That’s another thing almost every Friday evening we go out for Fish and Chips at different restaurants. I’m getting to be a Fish and Chip gourmet also if I eat much more Fish and Chips I think I’ll start growing gills. Oh yeah there is also the bi-weekly excursion for Liver and Onions, which if I could I would eat almost every night. I love it. I really enjoy these outings as it gets me out and about (not oot and aboot) and away from the building and it’s confining atmosphere.
It is the last day of April and one could not ask for a nicer Spring day. It is clear and sunny and 16C (61F). The sun worshipper here in the building will soon be sitting outside soaking up the rays and working on their tans. For me those days are over for as I get older my tolerance for hot sunny days diminishes. The good thing is I can ride around on my scooter instead of being cabin bound. Got informed last night that I’m going to Port Dover (on Lake Erie) on May 16th. Never been there so it should be interesting. Had another friend praise my Beef Barley soup. For some inexplicable reason I make good soup and everyone who tries it praised it. Me I could live on soup in fact my favourite two are Navy Bean soup and Cabbage soup. Well that and Liver and Onions and Fish and Chips. I have also been introduced to some Indian cuisine in the form of Samosa and Paroka. Just spicy enough for my taste. Guess that’s all for now. Got the urge to go riding. Back sometime soon.
RAMBLINGS 2018 (8)
Methinks I am becoming overly fond of “Ramblings” because it doesn’t really task my mind as I can jump from subject to subject without having to really concentrate on what I am writing. My old curse of “Lazy Brain” is trying desperately to reassert itself. Been accused of being brain lazy on and off for most of my life. I remember my English teacher in grade 9 accused me of that, added if she could she would charge me in court for the crime of killing my brain. I laugh about it now but, she was right.
Now to the highlight of my weekend. Yesterday (Saturday) was a minor moving day. I bought a new used couch to replace the one I had. At 3:00pm my daughter, son-in-law, and grandson along with two of my lady friends from the building came to help move the old one out to the garbage and bring the newer one up from an apartment on the second floor. I was ordered to get out of the way and stop making suggestions. Seems my advice was not wanted so I sat in the corner at my computer desk and sulked. One good thing was I had spent the morning taking all my pictures off the hallway walls and disengaging the door closer so we wouldn’t have to fight with the door. Anyway things went well and I now own a smaller firmer couch that won’t play hell with my back. Kinds blew my mind yesterday to see my grandson walking around with a robot baby. Seems it’s a school project that they have to do. You have to look after this “BABY” like it was real and it has sensors so the teacher can download the info and see how good you are doing. To me it’s weird. If they tried that when I went to school, there would have been a riot.
Went with B. to Hamilton to take back the furniture dolly we borrowed from her daughter to move the couches. On the way home we stopped at this little East Indian restaurant and picked up some Samosa and some other pastry with onions. They are spicy but not to bad. No flames shooting out of your mouth hot. Just tangy.
It is a cold, rainy, miserable day and I’m sitting here listening to “Africa” by Toto and wishing the good weather would hurry up and get here. Guess I’ll have to wait a bit longer as the weather report is calling for snow flurries on Sunday, April Fools Day. Hey why not. Snow is a four letter word up there with a good many expletives which are not used in polite company. It seems to me the older I get the longer winter gets. I know that that is not the case but it feels like it.
I’m looking forward to Friday evening, the 30th, as a bunch of us are going to Stoney Creek for Fish and Chips. Of late I am becoming a connoisseur of that U.K. staple. Always have liked Fish and Chips and now it seems to be becoming regular Friday Fare. I love Halibut but it is expensive so I have Haddock, which I also like. There was an excellent Fish and Chip place on Appleby Line up near Highway 5, served only Halibut, they went out of business after about a year. The rent in the plaza where it was located became to high. Too bad as they were damn good Fish and Chips. When I was a kid and a Catholic I had to eat fish every Friday as it was a rule of the church. Hated it as my Dad wasn’t a Catholic and he could have meat while I had Fish Sticks. To this day “I HATE FISH STICKS.” Well there isn’t much to ramble about so I’ll call it quits for today. Be back sometime later. Who knows I might get tired of rambling and do some serious writing. We’ll see.

I GOT THE YUKS. 2018/03/08
I am depressed. I am grumpy, lethargic, and tired. That about covers my feelings of late. Yesterday I did something I rarely ever do I took an afternoon nap. Slept about an hour and a half and as usual woke up feeling worse than when I laid down. Never could nap. Woke up this morning sucking air in through my mouth. I have sleep apnea and have to wear a breathing mask that covers my nose when I sleep. This morning the power went off and the mask stopped working. Shook the bejesus out of me. Mouth was dryer then the Sahara. I guess at my age all the so called sins of my past life are catching up on me. Anyway what some call sins I call indiscretions or follies of youth.
Some people know I own an Electric Scooter. I love it as it gives me mobility but of late I am having some problems with my balance so it looks like I’m going to have to sell my baby. I think my daughters will be happy as they are convinced I’m going to end up splattered all over the road. I’ve owned 4 Electric Scooters each one bigger and faster than the previous one. So after eight years it looks like my riding days are drawing to an end. Oh well it couldn’t last forever as I figured my sense of balance would change as I got older.
Woke up at 4:00am with a hell of a cramp in my left calf. The only way I could relax it was to stand up and force my left heel to the floor. It worked but it took about a half hour to get back to sleep. Went to the Mall yesterday and came home with a new upgraded “Smart Phone” which I really like. Got the Internet on it so I’ll have to try that out.
Yesterday the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario held a vote to select a new leader. They managed to screw that up. The count was contested because of something called “The Riding Vote” this means you can have the most votes but if you don’t carry enough ridings you lose. Since when did we become Americans? This smacks of their “Electoral College” which is the dumbest idea ever thought up. Lte last night Doug Ford was declared the winner but the runner up is not conceding defeat. Only Conservatives could screw a simple thing like counting votes. The Fates will be busy keeping a dingbat like Doug Ford (Brother of Rob Ford the notorious Mayor of Toronto) from messing up the Province worse than it is. I’m a Liberal but, of late the Liberals under Katherine Wynn are buggering up just about everything they touch. This started with Dalton McGuinty the Liberal Premier before Wynn. Now with Conservative having a new leader, TRUMP NORTH, may the Fates protect us.
Monday morning, the start of a new work week and I wonder what’s in store for the world in the next Five days. Lately it feels that the world won’t survive another week of Trump, Putin, and Kim. They are like three schoolyard bullies threatening each other with Nuclear Toys. My rockets are bigger than yours. Yeah but I got more of them. I got you both beat mine are stealth and you can’t shoot them down. Someone should take them out to the wood shed and use the razor strop on all three.
RAMBLINGS 2018 (6)
Let’s see what I can dig up in the deep dark recesses of what suffices for my brain. Just 2 more days after today that is until the end of February. Is it me or are the days going by at warp speed, seems like it was just yesterday that it was January. Its’ just me. It is an absolutely beautiful Day here in the Golden Horseshoe. Clear bright sunny day and the temp is 4C. A little chilly but it beats those dull dreary days that are usually common at this time of year. Looks like March is coming in like a Lamb. Let’s hope it goes out like one instead of like a Lion. On this coming Wednesday I go to pick up my new glasses. I didn’t think I needed them but the eye exam said different. Guess it what you get use to. Anyway as people who really know me know I have a tendency to procrastinate. Like Manana. There has been 6267 days since the beginning of the 21st Century. Okay unless you’re a time keeper or an Astrologist what significance does that have. Personally I haven’t a clue, just thought I’d throw it out there.
Our P.M. was in India on a Trade Mission and some kind of scandal erupted over a Seikh separatist being photographed with the P.M. and his wife. Some M.P. accompanying the P.M. screwed up and invited said Seikh to some state function in New Delhi. Seems to be a big kerfuffle over a mistake. Of course this is just what the opposition likes to jump on. Speaking of which the leader of the Conservative Party, who is also the Leader of Her Majesty’s Loyal Opposition, Andrew Scheer, is in my opinion a twerp. Enough said on that.
Another sunny day but still a bit chilly. Checking the long range forecast it is mostly on the plus side for March. This is weird. I know weather and climate change are different but climate change affects weather. Hell I’m no meteorologist (had to look up the spelling on that one) mostly I rely on my bones to tell me what the weather is going to be like. Ache. Rain, snow, or cold. No ache, weather will be good. Not very scientific but it actually seems to work, at times.
Before I forget. I’m at war with a squirrel. When I shut my A/C down in the fall I leave it in the sleeve under the window and I pack the sides of the sleeve with newspaper to insulate it. Now this little mama squirrel managed to pry the steel cover on the outside open and started removing the news paper for her nest. I closed the cover and taped it shut with duct tape. Figured that would stop her. Yeah, OK. She chewed through the tape and pried the cover open again. I began to think she has made her nest in there and there were babies. I took the cover off and looked inside, no nest, no babies. So I put the cover back re-taped it and this time I put one of my heavy wooden balcony chairs against the cover. So far success. Wonder how long it will last? Last year one of those furry little boogers torn my canvas chair apart and made her nest. Really peed me off. I went out to throw the chair away only to be greeted by this little face staring up at me. Hope they appreciated my soft heart because I couldn’t remove them. Left them there until they were big enough to go out on their own. One of the tenants bought a mechanical owl to try and keep the pesky little boogers off her balcony. I’ll have to find out if it is working. Squirrels maybe cute but they are destructive little pests. Well March is nigh upon us and with it comes another round of medical appointments for yours truly. First the Optometrist, then the Cardiologist with the possibility of getting another Angioplasty, then the Sleep Clinic, and finally my family physician. Methinks I’m keeping the local med, establishment in business. If it wasn’t so final it would be cheaper to shoot me.
RAMBLINGS 2018 (5)
Well here we are again off on another Ramble. Of late my mind seems to jump around like a “Mexican Jumping Bean”. Either my thoughts are becoming totally disorganized or it is a round about way for my mind to sort things into proper order. Which ever it is I hope my mind gets its’ act together damn soon.
It has been nine days since the Florida school shooting and it looks like there is a possibility something may be done to end these senseless acts. The Florida Legislature is voting to increase the age for purchasing AR 15s from 18 to 21 and to ban Bump Stocks and Trump is going to push for stronger background checks. There will never be a gun free America but enforcing stricter gun laws will hopefully curtain random mass shootings.
Meanwhile up here in the “Great White North”, hold on. It might be white in other parts of the country but right now in southwest Ontario it is closer to spring conditions. This is February and it is supposed to be cold not warm and raining. The next person who says Climate Change is a hoax I’m going to throttle him or her. The weather we have been experiencing over the last 2 to 4 weeks isn’t normal for this time of year. Well they say “if March comes in like a Lamb, it goes out like a Lion”. We’ll just have to wait and see.
Tomorrow (it is roughly 4:00 a.m. on the 25th in Korea, 14 hours ahead of Toronto) is the last day of the Winter Olympics and Canada has done very well in the Medal Standing with 29 standing 2nd behind Norway with 38. This is better than the Vancouver Games in 2010 when Canada won 26 medals. Our Women’s Hockey Team lost to the U.S. winning Silver. Our Men’s Team was beat by Germany causing them to Play the Czechs for Bronze. Canadas’ biggest rival is the U.S.A. and this time it is the American’s time to shine in Hockey. Hey it’s only 4 years until the next Winter Games.
Watch a good movie last night “Hidden Figures” it is about a group (3 in particular) of Afro-American who were human computers for NASA in the early 60s. The 3 that the movie focuses on are a computer wiz, an engineer, and a mathematician and how they overcame the discrimination and segregation that was their constant companion even though they were just as intelligent, and in some cases more, than their male counterparts. Their work put Shepard, Grissom, and Glenn in space. The went onto work on the Apollo Program and the Shuttle. I thoroughly enjoyed it. All three lead female actresses were outstanding.
The 2018 Winter Olympics are over and Canada did very well in 3rd place with 29 medals behind Norway with 39 and Germany with 31, The next Winter Games will be in China in 2022. One parting comment on the Olympics in general and that is the cost of them is getting absurd in the hundreds of millions of dollars. I have always maintained that there should be one international site for the summer games and another for the winter games. Seeing as the Olympics started in Greece perhaps they should be returned there permanently and an Alpine country should be picked for the Winter Games. All competing countries should share the expense of building and maintaining the venues. Of course the argument against this is that the hosting countries would get all the profits generated by tourism. Perhaps some way could be found that the profits go to the Olympics to help in maintaining the sites. Well just a thought. Don’t think it will ever happen. So adieu from this Rambling through the writers’ mind.
Be back sometime.
AMERICA THE BLOODY
For a country that claims to be the “Greatest Nation on Earth” they have one “Hell of a” big problem. It seems that mass shootings are becoming the “National Past Time’. Lately there has been a spate of these senseless killings.
The American Motto is “In God We Trust” perhaps that should be “In Colt We Trust”, after all it is said that Colt “Made all men equal”. This obsessive addiction to fire arms is bordering on religious fanaticism spurred on by the “Pope of Pistols” Wayne Lapierre preaching from the pulpit of the High Temple of the ‘NATIONAL RIFLE ASSOCIATION, (N.R.A.) financed by the American Gun Manufacturers. They should have their own 10 Commandments to indoctrinate their followers.
1. You shall carry a gun at all times.
2. you shall buy as many guns as you can.
3. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord Colt.
4. Remember to pay your N.R.A. dues.
5. Honour Colt and Remington.
6. You shall kill when threatened.
7. You shall not buy foreign fire arms.
8. You shall keep a large supply of ammunition.
9. You shall attack any who try to take your guns away.
10.You shall keep your fire arms in good condition. You may be called upon to use them at a moments notice.
The days of children being safe at school are over. In fact, in America, you are not safe anywhere be it a concert, at the movies, or at religious services, or walking down the street. Mass shootings are the new scourge.
The corruption of the American political system is mind boggling when an association like the N.R.A., with a membership of around five million can hold the rest of the country in the palm of its’ hand and dictate policy. It has been actively lobby the U.S. Government since 1975. The N.R.A. has tweaked and spun the 2nd Amendment to suit its’ own purpose which are somewhat different than the original intent. Perhaps they still fear that the “Red Coats” will return after 242 years.
Last Wednesday 14 February (St. Valentines Day) at around 2:30 in the afternoon the shooting started and within 10 minutes 17 people were dead and 14 others wounded. The body count included 3 Teacher who tried to protect their students, and 14 teenagers. The shooter himself a teenage (19) with what reports are saying had serious mental health problems. If these reports are true how in the hell was he able to legally purchase an AR 15 assault rifle and ammunition? Why are American gun manufacturers allowed to make civilian version of military weapons? It boils down to a corrupt political system and politicians to weak or cowardly to stand up against the Weapons makers and say no. What logical reason is there for civilians to own these murderous weapons? The usual reason given is for protection. Isn’t that what the Police are for. Of course in the U.S. your just as likely to get gunned down by them as by a criminal. I hope I am wrong in saying this but it’s not likely, I month from now when the Florida shooting is no longer news it will slowly fade from the national conscience and nothing will change. In America thses shootings will go on and on and nothing will change.
